In case of a tie in votes, the Speaker in the chair uses their casting vote.

Powers and Functions of the Speaker:
» Presides over and conducts the Lok Sabha sessions.
» Speaker's permission is mandatory to introduce any bill in the Lok Sabha.
>> No member belonging to the ruling or opposition parties should speak without the Speaker's permission.
> When chaotic situations arise in the House, the Speaker announces their ruling to establish a peaceful environment.
Members must strictly follow it.
> Can suspend members from the House for violating discipline and disrupting decorum.
> Grants recognition to political parties in the Lok Sabha.
The Speaker's decision is final on whether to include or remove any matter from the official records of the House.
» Can adjourn Lok Sabha meetings (sine die) [indefinitely].
» Can postpone Lok Sabha meetings [temporarily].
> The Speaker decides whether a bill is a financial bill or not.
>> Presides over joint sittings of both houses.
» The Speaker can use their "casting vote" when votes are tied in the Lok Sabha.
> The Speaker officially announces the resignation of the President.
> The Speaker is described as the protector of the rights of Members of Parliament.
> Mediator between Parliament and the President.
"Even if the Lok Sabha is dissolved, the Speaker's position is not dissolved."
According to the Anti-Defection Act, the Speaker can disqualify MPs who defy the whip and MPs who switch parties.
> Chairs the Speakers' Conference held in the country.
> Represents our country or may send their representative to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Forum Conference held globally.
