 Lok Sabha (House of the People)

> Article 81 describes the structure of the Lok Sabha.

> Article 83 - Term of the Lok Sabha is 5 years.

    * (The President can dissolve it even before the term expires.)
    * (During a national emergency, the term of this house can be extended by 1 year at a time.)
    * (Elections must be held within 6 months after the emergency ends.)

> Number of Lok Sabha Members:

    First Lok Sabha (1952) - 489+2 (Nominated members)

    Current - 543+2 (Nominated members)

> The current number was determined by the 31st Amendment in 1973.

> The current number is based on the 1971 population census.

    * Article 83 - After every decennial census in the country, the government appoints a Delimitation Commission.
    Based on the recommendations of this committee, Parliament determines the number of constituencies and categories.

> Through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment in 1976, it was decided that there should be no change in the number of Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly seats until 2001.

    > 84th Amendment in 2001: Through this amendment, it was decided that there should be no change in the number of MPs and MLAs until 2026.

        * After 2026, the number should be revised only according to the 2031 population census.

> Recently, constituencies for Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies were reorganized based on the recommendations of the Delimitation Committee headed by Justice Kuldeep Singh.

> 87th Constitutional Amendment (2003) - Constituencies were reorganized based on the 2001 population census.

    > Constituencies were reorganized geographically and in terms of reservations.
    But there was no change in the number of seats.

    > The reorganization of constituencies is called "Gerrymandering".

        + To date, 4 Delimitation Commissions have been formed and functioned in India.
